Platform Switching: A New Paradigm in Dental Implants

The abutment-implant connection in many dental implant systems has moved toward a platform shift, with an abutment diameter narrower than the platform of the implant. As a result, the connection is a tight conical seal. Some of the newer implant system designs have matching abutments that make it conducive to have platform switching. This bone-preserving connection with novel thread designs provides robust primary stability. This combination enables ideal conditions for immediate loading of the dental implant. Some of the newer thread designs are useful of in areas of limited bone quality, and when bone volume is limited. This lecture will review the applications some of the techniques and options available to the surgeon and restorative dentist. There will be a focus on prosthetic solutions and the fabrication of immediate provisionals.

A case presentation will precede the lecture.
