Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. No more need to deal with uncomfortable dentures or bridges—with permanent dental implants, a person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat and smile with effortless confidence. How is the procedure performed?Dental implants are titanium cylinders that are implanted under the gums. They are used as anchors to support functional natural looking teeth. At his practice in Westchester, Dr. Bavar has developed techniques that will permit in selected cases to have the implants placed without cutting the gums to expose the bone. The implants are placed and in many cases stationary teeth can be placed at the same visit. Dr. Bavar is a surgically trained prosthodontist. He performs both the implant placement and the making of the replacement teeth. How invasive is implant therapy?Implant therapy is less invasive than traditional bridgework. The adjacent natural dentition is not modified (drilled on) which can cause additional problems in the future on these those teeth. Denture WearersMost people wearing dentures have some form of discomfort. Lower dentures usually have very little retention. When the dentures are loose there is difficulty in chewing food, pain, and embarrassment in social situations. Dr. Bavar performs simple procedures where a minimum number of implants are placed. These are utilized to stabilize the denture. When the denture has good retention the comfort is restored to the patient. For those patients that are candidates for a fixed prosthesis with permanent porcelain crowns multiple implants are placed and the patient is restored with natural looking ceramic teeth. How much pain is involved? All of the procedures are performed with an adequate amount of local anesthetics. If the patient desires sedation it is also available. There is no pain whatsoever during the procedure. Post operatively the pain level is less than dental extractions. Most patients find Tylenol or Advil is sufficient. Stronger pain medications can also be prescribed but are very rarely needed. Is this treatment expensive? In many cases implant therapy costs are similar to the cost of conventional fixed bridgework. On major cases the office arranges convenient payment plans to accommodate the patient's budget. Am I a candidate for dental implants? Many patients that have been told they are not candidates for dental implants have been successfully treated by Dr. Bavar. Through the use of special size implants or bone grafting techniques, Dr. Bavar can place implants in cases which in the past may not have been possible. There are many new materials that Dr. Bavar uses that permit the bone grafting without having to remove bone from other parts of the patient's body or jaw. Implant Dentistry is a constantly evolving medium and it is important to have the state of the art techniques available. |
